Ask an international businessperson which country they think is surviving the recession the best, and one in five of them will answer "Australia".

A study conducted by Servcorp last month in 24 nations asked more than 7500 people which nation they believed was faring the best in these international times of financial hardship.

"Over 71 percent of Australian businesspeople believe we are the lucky country," Servcorp's executive director Taine Moufarrige said. "And it's interesting to see that the rest of the world agrees."

The top 12 countries were:
First: Australia
Second: China
Third equal: India and Singapore
Fifth: Hong Kong
Sixth: Canada
Seventh equal: Japan and Qatar
Ninth: New Zealand
Tenth equal: Malaysia, Sweden and Vietnam

The survey was designed to gauge business confidence and what impact the economic downturn has had on businesses globally.

Where would you like to ride out the global financial crisis? Is Australia really the lucky country? How much has the recession affected your life?

  • Recession sucks. Half of my firends have been made redundant and can't get a job. Only good thing is cheap houses.

  • Interesting that China came in 2nd as the place to be in a recession, I have been to China each year for 3 years before the recession and the cost of living against the salary paid is vastly different. Many part of Australia are suffering and I think in the populated areas but living in Northern Australia we have never been so busy as many others in business here also. Like the Keating " recession " we survived well then also. Summary, anywhere in the tropics
