Without the incentive of having to look good in boardies every weekend – and with all those extra layers of clothing to conceal any extra flab – it can be tough to keep up your summer form through the cold months. This winter, prevent the gross enlargement of your gut... and next year's screams of horror at the beach.
Stay active
Fight the temptation to sloth around on the couch all winter watching the footy and stuffing your face with pies and beer. Once the game’s over, head to the gym for a cardio and weight training workout to burn fat and build muscle.
Another great winter sport is swimming in an indoor pool; it burns more kilojoules per hour than jogging, cycling or lifting weights. Hit the gym or pool at least three times a week – or more depending on your summertime activity level.
Avoid comfort foods
When the temperature drops, you suddenly find yourself craving fatty and sugary foods. And everyone else seems to be indulging, so why shouldn’t you? Because you’ll look like a Christmas turkey by December, that’s why.
Your diet is key in staying slim this winter so allow yourself the odd treat – like a pizza while watching the game with your mates – but walk past the biscuit aisle when doing your food shopping for the week and pack your fridge with healthy snacks instead.
Try low-fat tzatziki with raw veggies or rice crackers, easy-to-snack-on fruit like bananas and apples, homemade popcorn with no butter, and low-fat yoghurt. They might sound boring now, but if you don’t have any fattening alternatives on hand you’ll soon get used to your healthy snacks.
