º"The time is right for home brewing," says Andrew Hamilton who, admittedly, sells the stuff in his shop, Stew's Home Brew in Maroochydore, Queensland. "Current statistics show that home brewing is up 30 per cent in some areas. We're all feeling the pinch and what better way to reject the recession than to brew your own beer." What better way, indeed? Best of all, Hamilton reckons with a bit of application and practice, you'll be giving the boutique brewers a run for the money in no time. Take it away, Andrew...
1. Tooheys Classic Dry Lager
An easy-drinking brew that's lightly hopped, so less bitter, but retaining good body and a crisp, dry finish. "Use 1kg of dextrose," says Hamilton. "Ferment for four to seven days at 18-28ºC and mature for at least two weeks."
How much? $15.90
2. Morgan's Golden Saaz Pilsener
"A pale golden lager with unique fresh saaz hop aroma. It's one of our best-sellling beers, enjoyable alll year round. To achieve the best from this, try blending it with one of Morgan's new Master Malt Extracts. Ideally, ferment it for 10 days at 25ºC, five to carbonate and 10 to mature."
How much? $16.60
3. Brewcraft Bavarian Wheat
"Pale with a tight head, this distinctive tasting beer has surged in popularity. As Bavarian wheat beer uses premium imported home brew concentrates, hopped malt extract and natural ingredients, it's quite a stable beer. Ferment at about 25ºC for five days and 10 or more days of maturing. A nice drop."
How much? $19.90
4. Cascade Spicy Ghost Draught
"A zesty wheat-inspired draught with balanced hopping creates a smooth yet slightly tart palate. This is a treasure. For extra flavour I recommend a premium home brew extract. Ideally, ferment at 24ºC for four to five days followed by 10 days maturing at room temperature."
How much? $15.95
