Porsche 918 Spyder

It is abundantly clear to anyone of sound mind that hybrid cars are the Kevin Rudds of the motoring world: very clever, trying very hard to be green yet kind of failing, and dangerously boring.

And we all know that they look, as typified by the loathsome Toyota Pious, like the result of a rear-end accident with a truckload of Corolla parts. So we know, in our cores, that the car on this page – clearly a Porsche, for heaven’s sake – cannot be a hybrid.

And yet it is. In fact, the 918 Spyder is the world’s first super hybrid, capable of 0 to 100km/h in 3.2 seconds, a top speed of 320km/h and fuel consumption of just three litres per 100km (or a hefty sounding 93 miles per gallon in old-man speak).

The owners of this car will be able to do something no supercar snob has ever been able to before: bore people at parties talking about fuel economy while simultaneously annoying them by being all haughty and superior about their green credentials: “It also emits just 70g of CO2 per kilometre – that’s less than half what the Hybrid Camry produces! No more Pinot for me thanks, I’m driving.”

Find out why Porsche has succeeded where others have failed...
