Big-screen adaptations of videogames have three things in common: lots of potential; big budgets; and unfathomable suckiness. Oh man, do they suck. Rom-coms, family films, movies starring Madonna… hell even silent films boast a better track record.
Jersey Girl or
Super Mario Bros.?
Fly Away Home or
Street Fighter?
Swept Away or
Doom? It should be an easy choice, but it’s not.
Want more?
Mortal Kombat, Final Fantasy,
Tomb Raider,
Resident Evil,
Double Dragon,
Hitman,
Max Payne,
Silent Hill and
Dead Or Alive. That’s not even the entire list or any of those butchered by German schlockmeister Uwe Boll:
Far Cry,
Blood Rayne,
Postal,
House Of The Dead… Oh, the mediocrity!
It’s bizarre that most get the green light in the first place, but a downright miracle that we keep getting sucked into thinking the next one will buck the trend. It’s no wonder
Lord Of The Rings director Peter Jackson finally came to his senses and pulled the pin on
Halo. (A decision that was pretty depressing, actually. If anyone can breathe life into a tired genre, it’s Jacko.) Still, Hollywood persists. And you know you’ll be YouTubing trailers of the new crop…
Prince of Persia,
Mortal Kombat Devastation and
Kane & Lynch...
