Damned medical science froths hard over pies, finger buns and basically everything good that enters our mouths. But now, the men (and sexy bookish women) in white coats are discovering more about tucker that actually helps you shed kilos.
Blueberries
Packed with age-defying antioxidants, phyto flavonoids and vitamin C, blueberries are thought to change how the body stores and processes glucose for energy. A new study shows rats who ate a blueberry-rich diet lost belly fat – which is linked to heart disease and diabetes – and experienced a drop in cholesterol. Go, rats! A 100g serve per day contains around 239kJ – try them on cereal or in smoothies.
Broccoli
If a Quarter Pounder is the mother of all fat-gaining foods, then broccoli’s surely the mother of all fat-loss foods. A cup of cooked broccoli contains zero fat and only 185kJ, and the high fibre content helps fill you up. One of the richest vegetable sources of calcium, iron, and magnesium, it’s been shown to contain cancer-fighting chemicals, too.
Oats
Oats fit the bill when it comes to reducing hunger. The high fibre content fills you up and delays stomach emptying, so you’ll feel fuller for longer. Oats are one of the best brekkie options due to the complex carbohydrates they contain, which aid long-term fat loss. Your heart will also benefit from their vitamins and minerals.
