Van Halen gets the
Guitar Hero treatment.
What's it about?
No prizes for guessing here: it's a Van Halen fest,
Guitar Hero style. Granted, this Californian band was a big deal, and Eddie Van Halen ranks with the very finest six-string maestros of his generation, but beyond a few stand-out tracks
– such as
Jump – Van Halen can consider themselves a lucky foursome to become just the third band to be given their own game (behind Aerosmith and Metallica).
What's good about it?Fans will be pleased, with 25 Van Halen tracks on the roster. The other 19 can be treated as a bonus, with a (mainly) modern rock line-up to build up calluses to: Blink 182, Lenny Kravitz and Fountains of Wayne join Deep Purple as the support acts. The Van Halen tracks are the trickiest: a digital nod of the hat to Eddie's fingers of fury.
What's bad about it?For whatever reason, there are some intentional holes in the game's make-up
– and they're gaping. The track list and art of the game centre around the David Lee Roth-led "classic" line-up; fair enough, but tough on former members who don't rate a mention at all. It's not just Gary Cherone who's snubbed: Sammy Hagar misses out too.
Verdict
Great if you're in need of a new
Guitar Hero challenge. Even better if you love David Lee Roth.
Guitar Hero: Van Halen is available now on PS3, XBOX 360 and Wii.
