Q: "I don't care about fitness and all that – I just want a six-pack. Can you help?”… Ant, via email
A: “To lose weight safely and keep it off, aim to shed 1 per cent of your body weight a week,” says Fitness First trainer Donal Carr, who’s been in the biz for 20 years. Okay… but what about the six-pack?
“The right food is paramount – the right quality and ratios of fats, proteins and carbohydrates. Also, you need to keep in mind adrenal fatigue. If you don’t get enough sleep your hormone levels go out of whack and you’ll store excess fat around your mid-section. Stress can also have a similar effect.
“Water is also a key element in weight loss. It has amazing results when consumed in the right quantities: digestion, elimination, assimilation, energy production, repair and regrowth of cells in the body.
“But getting a six-pack is about reducing your body fat so you can see all the hard work. If you haven’t done the correct exercises then all the steps I mentioned will be a waste. I recommend eight to 12 repetitions of 70 per cent intensity for three to four sets of two exercises: the full Swiss ball sit-ups with resistance; and hanging leg raises.”
