How to change a tyre

Every guy knows how to change a flat tyre, right? If you don’t, don’t be embarrassed; you’re not alone. But you should know how, so we’re here to help. Memorise the steps or print this article and stick it in your glove box. You can thank us when your girl has told everyone you know how you saved your romantic weekend getaway from disaster by heroically changing the tyre. Swoon.

1. Move your car away from traffic and put your hazard lights on. Make sure the ground is hard and flat as it’s nearly impossible to jack a car on soft ground.

2. Put the car in park – or in gear if it’s manual – and apply the handbrake to stop the car from rolling. If possible, place a chock – a piece of wood or a brick – under one of the wheels on the opposite side of the car to the flat tyre.

3. Take out the spare tyre and the jack. Get down on your knees and locate the small notches on the underside of your car, which is where you need to place the jack. If you don't put it in the right place, you could crack the body when you start lifting.

4. Once it’s in the right place, slowly turn the handle until the jack is supporting but not lifting the car. Make sure it’s firmly in place and lifting the car straight up and down.

Now for the fun part…

  • Why does this article need to exist. If you dont know how to change a tyre then i guess your not ready to drive a car just yet. Same goes if you dont know how to check all your fluid levels each week. Maybe somone could do an article on how to fill up the petrol tank too. God help us all.

  • One safety precaution taught to me by my father was to place the spare under the edge of the car near the jack so that if the car slid from the jack the car would be high enough off the ground to refit the jack. When the flat was removed it would take the position of the spare under the car. HOWEVER the things outlined byHuh! should be required to be part of licence testing however, it probably wouldn't be remembered anyway, any more than remembering what a signed speed limit means!!
