What the hell is metabolic rate anyway? We clarify some common fitness terms.
Metabolism
The combination of chemical reactions that occur continually in living things to keep them functioning normally.
Basal metabolic rate
Also known as BMR, this is the amount of energy your body burns at rest. Try to avoid eating too much fat, sugar and starchy foods, as they are high in calories.
Metabolic rate
The amount of energy your body needs to function normally; the rate can be manipulated by eating certain foods at certain times of the day. A good diet will play a huge role in speeding up metabolic rate; try to make permanent changes rather than following a strict diet for a period of time. Don’t go back to your old eating habits!
Daily energy expenditure
A calculation of the energy or kilojoules your body will use based on your BMR and the energy you use in everyday life. Keep reminding yourself that the more you move the more you lose. In addition, eating six smalls meals each day along with regular exercise will give you a huge number of health benefits.
Cardiovascular training
Exercise that gets your heart and lungs working hard. This may be running, jogging, cycling, swimming, or high-intensity weight training. This type of training will elevate your heart rate and your metabolic rate. Also, your metabolic rate will stay elevated for some time after the exercise, thereby burning more calories.
Resistance/weight training
A high-intensity form of exercise that forces the body to use more carbohydrates as a fuel source. It encourages your body to maintain and even increase your muscle mass; muscle is the most metabolically active tissue in the body, and having more of it will speed up fat burning.
