No more boob jobs for Italian teens

Italy is set to introduce legislation making it illegal for girls under 18 to get breast enlargements or any other form of plastic surgery after it was revealed that 10,000 teenage girls went under the knife in 2008.
The concern comes from the growing number of botched operations or low-quality silicon implants. The government wants to create an official register of surgeons qualified to perform cosmetic surgery.
"Far too many adolescent girls are unaware of the fact that there are risks with this type of surgery and it should not be used purely for fashion and looks,” said Francesca Martini, an undersecretary within Italy's welfare ministry. “At the moment we have a Wild West, cowboy style system of plastic surgery for young women and this must stop."
And many surgeons seem to agree. "We are very much in favour of this register because too many people carry out these operations without the proper qualifications,” said Francesco D'Andrea of the Italian Society of Plastic Surgeons.
