Researchers in the UK have found there is a strong link between higher levels of vitamin D and the ability of middle-aged men to process information.
The study, conducted by the University of Manchester, measured the amount of vitamin D in more than 3000 men aged between 40 and 79, and also the ability of each man to complete simple tasks.
They found that those with high levels of vitamin D performed best.
Researchers "observed a significant, independent association between a slower information processing speed and lower levels of vitamin D," lead researcher Dr David Lee, from the university's school of translational medicine, told Agence France-Presse.
The study also showed that men with higher levels of the vitamin "performed consistently better in a simple and sensitive neuropsychological test that assesses an individual's attention and speed of information processing," the researchers said in a statement.
In 2008, a study in Amsterdam found that a lack of vitamin D could increase the risk of depression or other psychiatric problems, particularly among older people, Agence France-Presse reported.
