Duffel coats, bow ties, some bloke’s hair, bonkers Rio electro-funk and the 17 other
FHM-endorsed style touch-points of the year.
1. Cider
With the explosion of craft brewing stacking more and more beers-that-require-a-bottle-opener onto bottle shop shelves, it makes sense for other quaffing beverages to offer a spot of difference for the discerning or gluten intolerant. Hence, cider. On blazing hot days, cider goes down faster than the Maginot Line. The English stalwart Strongbow now has stiff competition from Magners, Scrumpy Jack and Bulmers (all four are owned by Bulmers), as well as Pipsqueak, made by WA brew champions Little Creatures. More quench, less guts, more style.
Tip: More of a spirits guy? Go for Whiskey sours – the winter choice.
2. Plaid
Whether it be a version of red-and-black, flannel lumberjack checks or tweeds lifted from the Dean of archaeology’s closet, “heathered” patterns will be everywhere for the next couple of winters. Even the Dean’s elbow patches are in, thanks to horsey ranges from Pharrell Williams’s Billionaire Boys Club label. Jackets, vests, suits, socks, ties – even undies – will all come in new takes on traditional patterns. And plaid – or tartan, if you like – is going berserk. Well, in as much as a patterned cloth can go berserk.
Tip: Take care with mixing and matching them.
3. Robert Pattinson’s hair
You may be sick of the sight of him, but there’s no doubt that Bobby P has ace hair. Essentially a chunked-up mop pulled back and high with a strong-hold product, it’s a piece of piss to accomplish if you have straight or moderately kinky hair. And it pulls off the neat trick of combining the boho, office, pub and meet-the-parents looks all at once.
Tip: Take a photo of the version you dig – he riffs on it a bit – to the hairdresser. There are only about 4,680,000 pics on Google.
4. TheSartorialist.blogspot.com
It’s a simple blog: former fashion distributor Scott Schuman travels the world and photographs fashionable people on the street. But jeepers, is it influential. Time magazine has listed the site as one of the top 100 design influencers in the world. Admittedly, a lot of it is at the fruitier, peacock end of style, but there are stacks of sharp-looking men and women who master sartorial excellence.
Tip: Use it to figure out accessory combos and find out what style works for different body shapes.
5. Big-ass boots
Tying in with the World War I aesthetic all over the racks in 2010 (see number nine), big-ass, army-inspired boots are hipper than a trumpet-playing pelvis. Aladdin-toed jobs and winklepickers are on the way out; even Chelsea boots have taken a back seat. Instead, gaited, buckled, round-toed jackboots below jeans, slacks or shorts will dominate feet for the forseeable future.
Tip: Wear ’em with a pair of straight-leg blue or black denims rolled up to just above the ankle.
Coats, rock stars and eras we love...
