Computer speakers

If the music from your computer speakers sounds like it was recorded in a matchbox, a new breed awaits.

From left to right...

Bose Companion 5, $599
If you want surround sound but don’t have room for a 5.1 speaker system (that’s the six-channel surround-sound standard for modern audio systems), the Bose Companion 5 offers a compromise. It’s easy to find space for the subwoofer and two satellites, and it uses Bose’s proprietary TrueSpace technology, which bounces the sound off walls and surfaces making it seem like the speakers are all around you. Perfect for gaming and movies.

Edifier S550, $599.95
For audio output that could muffle a marching band, look no further than the S550. This 5.1 speaker system (yep, 5.1!) delivers true surround-sound audio with its five satellite speakers, outputting a massive 295 watts – almost half of which come from the booming, 10-inch subwoofer. It comes with both wired and wireless remote controls; there’s a headphone output on the former when you want to give the neighbours a break.

JBL Duet III, $299.95
Taking up only a fraction of desk space, the JBL Duet III is ideal if you’re after a simple two-speaker system. The Zeppelin-shaped satellites have an attractive silver-and-black colour scheme, with dedicated power and volume controls on one speaker. Thanks to the built-in digital amplifier, you can turn these puppies up pretty loud without distortion, but the lack of subwoofer means you don’t get that deep and driving bass for techno and hip-hop tracks.
