The Top Gear boys have landed in Sydney and, true to form, Jeremy Clarkson has managed to whip up plenty of controversy at his very first press conference.
In town to host the Top Gear Live stadium shows, Clarkson used his maiden appearance to attack cricket, the PM and his co-star, Richard Hammond, in rapid succession.
But the comment that drew the most gasps was his decision to name age-old, and we mean old, activist Germaine Greer as one of the hottest Australians, while Hammond chose Cate Blanchett as the sexiest Aussie.
"She’s still attractive; Germaine is a good looking woman," Clarkson says.
He went on to describe Kevin Rudd as the most "nervous man" he had ever seen after watching the PM announce his economy bailout package last night.
"It was the first time I’d ever seen a world leader admit 'we’re in deep shit’. The poor man looked terrified – he’s actually seen the books.’’
And on cricket, Clarkson offered; "cricket was invented by people who haven’t got enough to do. I understand you just lost to South Africa. I wouldn’t worry about that. I’m always proud when England loses, it means there’s less of it on the telly.’’
Asked what he thought of Oz so far, Clarkson replied; "There’s a spider over here that eats you, (there’s) crocodiles, sharks, box jelly fish, we don’t have any of those things.’’ The outspoken host went on to describe people who quit smoking as cowards.
