Valentine's Day on a budget

The economic crisis is not just affecting the dollars we have in the bank. It is having a domino effect which is impacting every facet of our lives, including our relationships. With less money flowing in, the stress and worry of the unknown and the pressure to pay bills, romance and passion are often being put last on our list of priorities and in turn are sending our love lives on a downward spiral.

Relationship problems will only add to the already exiting stress of everyday life. With Valentine's Day around the corner, here are five ways to keep the romance alive without breaking the bank.

1. Make her a romantic dinner

Most women spend a significant proportion of the lives cooking for someone else. Many will often admit how nice it is to have someone else cook for them. Instead of taking her out for a fancy dinner which could pay the mortgage that month, create the fancy dinner in your own home. This meal does not have to be something Jamie Oliver would make (although that would help) it just has to come from the heart. A dinner in front of TV does not count, neither do takeaways. Try not to give her food poisoning though; that is surely one way to send passion and romance down the drain.

2. Love vouchers for personal services
Instead of an expensive gift, make her love vouchers where she can cash them in for your services. This is a chance to be as creative as you want. These vouchers can be as simple as washing up or cleaning the house or be a little bit more adventurous, such as for massages or even something more. Hopefully you know your partner well enough to understand what she may want you to do. And if it is something sexual, remember these vouchers are for her enjoyment not yours. Warning: go light on the vouchers otherwise you might be exhausted not from work but from cleaning and washing up.

3. Write her a romantic letter or poem
This is your chance to tell her how you really feel, not how Shakespeare feels. Do not copy a poem from the Internet; this needs to be your own words. Men tend to assume that women know how they feel about them, however women never get tired of hearing how much you love them and how beautiful they are, especially in writing. This is a gift that they will have forever and to them will be priceless, especially if they can show it to their friends.

  • We celebrated Valentines early cos my fiance's working tomorrow. I like cooking so my gift to him was dinner of all his fave foods. I wasn't expecting a gift from him but I was delighted when he gave me a beautiful hand-made card! He decorated it & wrote lots of phrases about why he loves me. It's lovely to get something so personal & that he put a lot of thought & effort into. It's the best present he has given me the whole 7 years we've been together! Something personal beats flowers or chocolates anyday!

  • Cleaning? "go easy on the vouchers etc? " Everyday living jobs aren't women's work and when men do them its not romantic. I've been married to the same guy for 27 yrs. We have a partnership. I'm not the maid. Go out for dinner, make love - use your imagination and leave the washing up for tomorrow!
